The 2011 Samsung Diamond League has begun in Doha with some excellent early season performances in the women’s events, especially from Funmi Jimoh (long jump), Kelly Wells (100m hurdles) and Anna Mishchenko (1500m).

It was a night when favourites faltered and new stars emerged – local stars in the shape of sprinter Femi Ogunode and high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim who both set national records – as the men’s events at the Doha Diamond League saw five of the seven Diamond Trophy winners from last year fail to register a win at the start of their 2011 campaigns.

06.05.2011 - High hopes for islanders Thomas and Ioannou

They come from small islands and both are one of the top high jumpers of the world. 2007 World Champion Donald Thomas from Bahamas and 2009 World silver medalist Kyriakos Ioannou from Cyprus look ready to add their names in the Doha SDL books as winners and new meeting record holders.

In Doha meeting no one has ever jumped higher than 2.28 but Thomas and Ioannou are sure that the bar will be raised higher than 2.30 tomorrow at Qatar Sports Club. more
